LEO

Fucking Ella—I snort. Now Jillie’s got me saying it. Ellen needs to quit with this hanging on me shit. I told her, multiple times, I’m with Jillie. I won’t be her bodyguard anymore, her fake boyfriend—though I never saw it like that.

“You need to respect what I said, or we can’t be friends anymore. Understand?” I tell her.

Her face is red as she pulls herself up off the ground next to the chair. I threw her off, she fell. I won’t apologize.

Now I see the anger take over for embarrassment. I grab her upper arm before she runs off and starts some shit.

“Get over it, Ellen. I mean it. I’ve done enough for you.”

“Fine,” she seethes, pulling her arm out of my hand, then turns. When she does, her face goes hard, her lips press tightly together.

Oh hell.

I look to see what she sees, and my heart soars up into my throat. I can’t stop the grin that overtakes my face—that is, until I get up close. I can see she’s been crying. Jillie’s not a pretty crier.

“What’s wrong, baby?” I pull her to me.

“Ella played a little trick, didn’t you bitchface?” Audrey declares.

“What?” I ask, then look down at Jillie.

Jillie sighs. “I was going to surprise you, she must have seen me, so she made sure I saw her hanging all over you.”

I look to Ellen who’s standing there looking at her nails as if she’s bored.

“That’s it, Ellen. No more. You pull one more stunt, and I’ll have a discussion with your parents that I should have had already,” I threaten. She doesn’t look so bored now. She looks very, very scared.

“Leo,” she whispers.

“You heard me. Cut the shit.”

Her friends surround her with looks of anger.

Jillie steps around me. “It didn’t have to be this way.”

Ellen walks up to Jillie, nearly in her face, “Oh yes, it did.”

With that, Ellen and her friends leave.

“Well, that’s exactly the kind of welcome home I was expecting from Ella,” Jillie says.

Audrey sneers. “I imagine we’ll need to be on guard now. That exit was less-than-friendly.”

“I warned her. I’ll do what I have to do if she keeps up her shit. I’m tired of this,” I admit.

Jillie hugs me. “Surprise!”

I let out a laugh as do the others around us.

“Welcome home, Jillie,” I whisper into her hair. “I’m so glad you came back early.”

“I’m not sure if I should be or not,” she tells me honestly.

Isla pokes Jillie in the shoulder. “Don’t you dare let her ruin your surprise, and don’t you dare be afraid of her. I’m not. What’s the worst she can do?”

I sigh. I wish she hadn’t asked that question. It usually jinxes things.
